Although I studied photography earlier in my life, my artistic focus was on the fiber arts. I exhibited my soft sculpture, wearable art, & stitched collages in the Northwest area during the 1960's & 70's. Later, my interest in textiles found outlet in my 17 year career in vintage clothing. But recently, photography has once again captured my attention.
I have had one-person exhibits at the Compleat Photographer Frame Shop and the Blue Scorcher Bakery Café, and have participated in the 2008 Surreal Show and a three person show at the Astoria Visual Arts Association Gallery. My photographs have been included in At the Water's Edge: The Magic of Astoria, Seaside & Cannon Beach by Adam Carlsen & Donald Matsen, as well as in Clatsop Community College's Rain magazine.
These photographs of angels from the cemetery surrounding San Miniato Church in Florence, Italy are a departure from the landscape, nature, and nautical photography that I have explored for the last two years.
These ancient angel statues are amazingly textured by time, and often overgrown with lichen & moss. My photos attempt to capture their disturbing and melancholy beauty. The angels manifest as sweet infants, beseeching youths, nurturing motherly beings, and heraldic winged creatures who point out the way to heaven to departing souls. All are beautifully carved creations of stone that stand in contrast to the impermanence of those they guard.
The angel photos are shot with my small traveling digital camera, a Canon Powershot S5IS and printed on an Epson inkjet printer with long lasting inks for longevity.
