Monica Lowe
I spent most of my life in Burbank, California where entertainment is the local industry, living and working in an area
were fake environments and mazes of hyper-real emptiness are created on a daily basis. Perhaps this proximity to the
machinery of false perception inspired my own experiments with suspension of disbelief.
All my work explores the disrupted system. Unlike the cacophony of television, I use subtle color, delicate marks and
a twist on the languages of both minimalism and mapping to create a convincing system. It is through the sensitivity
and understatement of my marks that a simple shift in line or color can create a disruption.
My newest work is greatly inspired by my recent move to Portland, Oregon. Surrounded by farmland and miles of natural
forest I am painting what I see, and disrupting its beauty with what I hear. Fear is being marketed around the nation,
a strong tool that has been used for centuries to manipulate so many. So I place a faint mushroom cloud in the distance,
disrupting the natural landscape with an iconic image of destruction. This work is an effigy of how the subtle insertion
of propaganda can shift our perception of the world.
Originally from California, Monica Lowe's work has been seen throughout Los Angeles and Orange County, including Laguna
Art Museum and Huntington Beach Art Center. Monica Lowe currently resides in Portland, Oregon
