Lisa Ackerman
Lisa Ackerman (a.k.a. LANA) grew up in Pasadena, CA where she studied art at an early age, always encouraged by her
mother whom was an artist and had a successful career as a fashion illustrator. Lisa moved to New York after
high school where she attended the Art Student's League and studied the great masters' work at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. After a few years she moved back to California where she received her degree for Two-Dimentional
Art. She has created numerous portrait commissions and conceptual, realistic paintings for various shows, and
sculpted anatomy models for artists and students. Currently she is a practicing oil painted and photographer. She
works out of Astoria, Oregon, where she is inspired by the rich green landscapes and influential art community.
The paintings currently showing at Redhare have been lovingly and loboriously brought to you by using the time-honored,
disciplined techniques of oil painting. I start the process off with the rub out technique, also known as the
Imprimatura, where one coats the canvas with a homogenous application of thinned down oil paint and rubs out the
areas that are lightest in value. once this is dry, the Underpainting stage is begun, where the basic colors or
the monochromatic palette is used. These values are laid out using opaque colors. When this is dry, and sometimes
sanded down if there is unwanted texture, more Underpainting layers can be applied with additional detail. Each
painting is different and will have seperate needs. When it feels right, a final Overpainting is applied in which the
paint is the most viscous and has the most oil. A wider range of colors (including transparent colors) may be used. Glazes
can be applied at this stage, where the artist will sometimes use unmixed pure color with much medium and the color
acts as a filter over the preexisting layers. That gives the painting a striking glow. The painting must then be allowed
to dry for at least a few months and then finally a coating of kamar varnish is applied to give the colors the richest
most saturated appearance.
