= Released from hospital
Lance Kirklin, 16, a sophomore at Columbine High School, went home Saturday. His condition improved enough for him to be released, but doctors say he has to go through at least six more reconstructive surgeries on his face.
Hospital: Denver Health Medical Center
Lance Kirklin Family Statement
"Lance has worked hard to overcome adversity. He believes in treating others as he would want to be treated. He is sensitive, caring and able to put the needs of others before his own. Though he is unable to speak at this time due to the nature of his injuries, he has indicated tremendous sadness and concern for the others affected by this tragedy. Knowing Lance, he would want to be available to comfort others and is moved by the outpouring of love and support he has received.
We know that Lance has many challenges to address, and we count on and ask for your continued prayers and support in the months ahead for all students and families affected.
Lance is an outdoorsman and loves to fish. He likes the opportunity to be in the mountains with family and friends. We know that his sadness will be lightened when he is again able to go to the mountains.
On behalf of Lance, we would like to thank all involved in Lance's rescue, Littleton and other communities throughout Colorado, across the country and worldwide for their prayers, support and love extended to Lance and his family. Especially all Lance's family in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, we appreciate your prayers and love. We would also like to thank Denver Health administrators, Surgical Intensive Care staff, Emergency Department staff, surgeons and everyone for caring for Lance and our family."

..Anne Marie Hochhalter, 17 years old, was transferred to Craig Hospital from Swedish Medical Center's Multi Trauma Unit to begin rehabilitation for injuries she sustained in the Columbine High School shooting of April 20th. Anne Marie sustained multiple life-threatening injuries as well as a spinal cord injury at the T-12 level around the area of her waist. According to Tom Balazy, M.D. of the Swedish Multi Trauma Unit, "Anne Marie has had a very complicated medical course since her injury, and is a very brave young woman". According to Anne Marie's parents Ted and Carla,
"Anne Marie is lucky to be alive. Her injuries were so severe that in
those early days at Swedish we were afraid she wouldn't make it. We believe
God gave her back to us. We want to thank the Littleton Fire Department
paramedics, and the physicians, nurses, and staff at Swedish Medical Center
for their skill and caring". They saved our daughter's life. We also would like
to thank all the people who are supporting us through this very hard time.
We are beginning to understand that this is a difficult and costly injury, but
continue to hope for the best."According to Craig's spokesperson Kenny Hosack, Anne Marie continues to request privacy from the media, and has asked that there be no requests for appearances, individual interviews, or photographs at this time. Anne Marie's parents want their focus to be on their daughter's rehabilitation, but periodically want to keep the community informed about Anne Marie's progress. Media requests for Mr. and Mrs. Hochhalter should be directed to Mr. Hosack. Periodic news release updates will follow.
In order to allow Anne Marie to fully participate in her rehabilitation program, visiting hours and phone calls will be limited according to the wishes of the Hochhalters. Visitations will occur from 7-9 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 pm. Even during these times, Anne Marie may not always be available to receive visitors. Visitors are required to check in at the Main Switchboard at Craig.
People wishing to share good wishes with Anne Marie and her family are encouraged to mail cards and letters to:

[top] [home] [resources] [print quality memorial graphics] [guestbook]Sean Graves, 15 ½ years old, Multi-trauma Unit. Four gunshot wounds-one in back and three in the abdomen. Fair and stable condition, movement and feeling has returned to his left foot. Sean has begun intensive therapy in the spinal cord injury program.
His injury has been termed an "incomplete," meaning he is paralyzed below the level of the wound but has some feeling and movement. Sean's doctors said his long-term prognosis is unknown.
Sean and his family wanted to update the community and nation on his condition and progress since his admission to Craig Hospital on May 4th from Swedish Medical Center.
According to Sean's doctors he sustained multiple gun shot wounds, including a serious wound that has resulted in an incomplete spinal cord injury around the area of his waist. "Incomplete" means that Sean is paralyzed below the level of the wound, with some feeling and movement at this time. Sean is currently using a wheelchair for mobility. Sean has begun intensive rehabilitation therapy in the spinal cord injury rehabilitation program at Craig, and he still fatigues easily. Sean's long term prognosis is unknown at this time, and his projected length of treatment at Craig has not yet been decided. Doctors and therapists remain hopeful about his progress.
The Graves family have continued to ask that there be no media coverage or individual interviews until further notice. They would like to periodically provide information about Sean's condition and progress, but want to maintain their privacy.
Strict visiting hours and incoming phone call screening are being enforced at the family's request so that Sean and the family can focus on Sean's therapy. Visitation hours are 7-9 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 pm, and visitors should come to the main hospital switchboard. Even during these times, patients may not be available to receive visitors, depending on how Sean is feeling. (from Craig Hospital Press Release, 5/12/99)

The following poem was written from the heart by
Patricia Weppler, Duanesburg, New York
May 1999~ Patrick ~
I would have never known you
But for that fateful day
I watched the horror on tv
As children lost their way.
I saw you from the window
Upon the second floor
Breaking glass with your hands
To reach a safer shore.
Head first out the window
You moved across the line
Into the arms of SWAT team men
Away from Columbine.
The image of you so determined
The courage that it took
Has seared itself into my heart
A page turned in my book.
Now it's two weeks later
I think about you still
I know your name is Patrick
Your road ahead uphill.
I have cried so much for your hurt
For you and your family I've prayed,
I'm not the only one who saw
The courage you displayed.
Around the world we know you
We saw your light that day
You are the boy whose spirit
Could not be torn away.
You showed amazing strength
In those hours of despair
Now months of work are still to come,
I know it isn't fair.
I've read about you in the news
How much you have to give
Though everything is now changed
You have the will to live
For God put His hand on you
That shocking April day
And with His love to guide you
He'll help you find a way.
Asking, "Why?" is painful
It is hard to understand
But He has a job for you to do
You are part of His vast plan.
Keep these thoughts with you
As you begin to heal
Let your faith be comfort
When it hurts too much to feel.
Know that safe inside you
You have the love of us all
Who watched you on that darkest day
And prayed you wouldn't fall.
So many lives have been touched
Our faces you've never met
You've inspired us to make it count
And we never will forget.
God bless all of the victims of this tragedy.
